Sunrise Teacher Honored

Ruben Guzman, Sunrise math teacher and assistant principal, was honored as a finalist in the four-county Region 5  nomination for California Teacher of the Year, a program of the California League of Middle Schools.

Mr. Guzman was honored last night at a dinner in Morgan Hill. He has been a teacher for eight years, the last half of those here at Sunrise.

In his acceptance speech Mr. Guzman spoke about the future of education: “Together, as educators, parents, and community leaders, we can shape a brighter, more inclusive future—one where every child believes they can succeed, and their growth reflects the care and commitment of those who guide them.”

Sunrise, in entering his nomination, said Guzman is “an amazing teacher who has a special talent for coming up with rigorous lessons that are relevant to our students’ backgrounds, highly engaging and written with a social justice lens.” Guzman also has guided his students to high growth on state and local testing and helps lead the school in numerous ways.

119 Students Promoted

Sunrise Middle School has promoted 119 students to high school.

Our students will be attending 25 different area high schools, including several prestigious private high schools on full scholarship.

Congratulations, Aztecs!

Another First Place!

The Sunrise boys soccer team won the league championship, 1-0 against KIPP.

This is the second first place trophy for the Aztecs.

Earlier, the boys basketball team won first place in the league.

Go Aztecs!

Sunrise Teacher Is Honored

Many congratulations to Ruben Guzman for being honored tonight as a recipient of the $2,000 Dr. Harry Edwards Follow Your Bliss award, given for the seventh year now by the 49ers Foundation and Micron Foundation.

Mr. Guzman was chosen for his dedication to youth, as well as his passion for equity and inclusivity, and his ability to incorporate social justice into math and other curriculum.  He was one of about several Bay Area educators honored. In all, 39 have been honored over the last seven years.

Dr. Edwards, an activist and educator who has guided the 49ers for the past 40 years, is known for exposing racism in athletics, as well as his efforts to help all youth get a strong education.

“You’re unsung heroes,” Edwards told the audience. “You make your students the changemakers of tomorrow… Keep changing the world, one student at a time!”

Edwards said that educators are “almost invisible” as they “pick up the pieces after the COVID interruption,” and that the Follow Your Bliss award is meant to let all educators know “you are not invisible to us – we see you!”

An educator for eight years, Mr. Guzman was raised by a single mom in the Central Valley. He focuses on making learning relevant for his students and on incorporating events in the world today into his lessons. His 8th grade students currently are presenting projects on major themes of justice studied throughout the year.

Mr. Guzman said he plans to use the $2,000 he received tonight to give back to his students, to honor their art and to help them become involved in their community.

Here are some fun pictures from the evening!

Sunrise teacher honored

Sunrise 8th grade English teacher Michelle Kara has been awarded Teacher of the Year for charter schools by the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

Ms. Kara was honored at a special awards ceremony Oct. 28. She was praised for her engaging and relevant lessons and for taking intense interest in each student – so much so that many students come back years later to let her know how well they’re doing in high school with her help.

Here is a portion of her video taken for the event:

Congratulations, Class of 2020

Thank you, Class of 2020, for your great sacrifice in staying home these last three months so that the community could be safe. We are urging you to plan to make a big difference in this world, which has become rather crazy. We believe you can and will make the difference. Please remember to go deep within for the answers.
We look forward to seeing your success at all the many different high schools you will be attending and then, in four years, at college!

The Sunrise Boys Soccer team just won the league championship game for the third year in a row, and the Girls Soccer team won for the second year in a row. Go Aztecs!

Rusila Racinez: Teacher of the Year

Rusila Racinez, algebra teacher and math/science director for Sunrise Middle School, was the only Santa Clara County charter school teacher selected as teacher of the year for 2015 at a recent countywide ceremony. Ms. Racinez has been teaching for 11 years. She is on a mission to help the most underserved students of Santa Clara County and firmly believes that all students can succeed despite their family income level or parents’ educational level.

Ms. Racinez brings a high degree of respect and professionalism to the classroom, and at the same time makes math fun and exciting. Her students learn to stay calm, to enjoy math, and above all, to welcome the challenge of solving a difficult problem on their own.

“A classroom culture that appreciates the uniqueness of every student, builds character, and values growth sets a strong foundation for future success,” she says. “Every day is an opportunity to help me level the playing field for my students.”
