SCHOOL CLOSED UNTIL APRIL 6
Sunrise Middle School, like all county public schools, is closing for three weeks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. This is a directive from the Santa Clara County Health Department and the County Office of Education.
We have given students online learning assignments for them to do while the school is closed. Please email [email protected] or call 408-659-4785 and leave a message, if your child is having trouble accessing these assignments.
We plan to reopen Monday, April 6th.
There will be no spring break, as initially planned.
We wish you and your family well during this time.
Please do not mingle with groups of people, as this defeats the purpose of the closure. During our school closure, we wanted you to know about places where you can get free food while your children are not being served meals at school.
Please note these food pantries:
- Second Harvest Food Bank, 750 Curtner Ave. 8-5 Monday-Friday, 800-984-3663
- Ecumenical Hunger Program (EHP), 2411 Pulgas Ave., 650-323-7781
- Also, some local libraries are providing food.
Comcast/Xfinity now has a phone number you can call to get free internet if you don’t already have it. Your children need internet to do their online assignments from their teachers. Visit www.internetessentials.com or call 1-855-846-8376 for English and 1-855-765-6995 for Spanish.
Career Day
Some 35 professionals came to our 7th annual Career Fair – nurses, lawyers, veterinarians, healers, artists, musicians, engineers, counselors, athletes, chefs, hair stylists and more. Thanks for being so inspiring!
Check out some images of the day here!
Sunrise Girls Make Robots
Sunrise Middle School girls make robots in new STEM after school club. KPIX Channel 5 picks up on the event! thanks to Sunrise volunteer Shruti Sridhar, a high school senior who, as an 8th grader, created a device to sense heat stroke and dehydration is now introducing others to the joy of innovation.
Finishing the Year Strong!
Sunrise Aztecs finished the 2018-19 school year strong! The amazing Class of 2019 again led the school in state test scores. Nearly 85% of our students met their growth target on NWEA reading and math tests. The girls won 2nd in the league in soccer. Two sixth graders won 2nd place in the San Jose computer coding Hackathon. We’re so proud of you all!
HIGH SCHOOL ACCEPTANCE LETTERS!
The high school acceptance letters are rolling in!
Three Sunrise students were accepted into the prestigious Bellarmine College Prep on Friday. Five more have been accepted into another prestigious school, Eastside College Prep.
And, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is sending acceptance letters to 14 students this week.
Way to go, 8th graders!
CODING AND ROBOTICS
Sunrise Middle held its 1st Annual Coding and Robotics Family Night, where we celebrated the learning that has occurred through a generous donation from Wells Fargo and the Silicon Valley Education Foundation.
Students taught their parents everything they’ve been learning with programming and coding.
21-DAY KINDNESS CHALLENGE
Sunrise Middle students kicked off a 21-day Kindness Challenge. Each day we will practice a special act of kindness to sharpen our awareness for the need to spread kindness, not hate. We will become aware that each thought we hold is for good or for bad – nothing is ever neutral!
Charter Renewal!
The Santa Clara County Board of Education, by unanimous vote, has approved another five-year charter renewal for Sunrise Middle School. The new charter includes the addition of a fifth grade class.
To enroll your student for next year, please visit the school office prior to the December 11 lottery, or download the on-line short application and submit to the school prior to the lottery date.
We appreciate the vote of confidence from the County Board and continue to work at improving each year!
Teacher of the Year!
Jessica De Anda, sixth grade English teacher, was honored as a Santa Clara County Teacher of the Year! This is Ms. De Anda’s fourth year teaching at Sunrise. She is a very dedicated teacher and also leads the English department. Ms. DeAnda believes in a student-centered classroom where students are empowered and active participants in their own education.
