Sunrise joins local public school districts in effort to block President Trump’s Jan. 25 order

Sunrise Middle School has joined other public school districts in supporting an effort in court to block President Trump’s Jan. 25 order that threatens public schools
that don’t cooperate with immigration officers. Trump’s executive order grants the U.S. Attorney General the authority to deny federal funds to public agencies, including schools, that deem themselves immigrant safe havens or sanctuary jurisdictions.

According to the brief filed in U.S. District Court on Wednesday, the president’s executive order “transforms schools from inclusive, safe places to places of fear and uncertainty, ultimately undermining our entire public education system.”

Among others signing the court document were the Alum Rock, East Side, Evergreen, Santa Clara, San Diego, Los Angeles, Gilroy, Mt. Pleasant, Campbell, and San Francisco school districts.

Sunrise Middle received high marks for its students’ academic growth

This week the state released its new system for holding schools accountable, and Sunrise Middle received high marks for its students’ academic growth. The accountability system, which replaces the old API, is called Dashboard, and it is a mix of colored circles that describe how a school is doing in various areas.

The Dashboard for Sunrise shows that all students and all groups of students (English Learner, low income, special education, etc.) “increased significantly” in math, and English Learners and Students with Disabilities “increased significantly” in English.

    Schoolwide Field Trip Day

Today is schoolwide field trip day. Students are exploring San Francisco, going horseback riding, visiting Hidden Villa Farm and the Tech Museum, taking the ferry to Alcatraz, and challenging themselves on a high ropes course. Education can happen outside the classroom walls, too!

    State Test Results Are In

The SBAC results from last spring are in, and more than half of our students rose a level in math or English or both from the previous year. Congratulations, Aztecs!

    First Day of School

The school year starts, and we have our largest sixth grade class ever – 79 students. Schoolwide enrollment grows to 189.

    New Summer Program Starts

Sunrise Middle starts its first all-day summer program, which will extend the entire month of July and include academics in the morning, and swimming, sports, technology, field trips, and the arts in the afternoon. Students this summer also have the opportunity to go one week cabin camping in Mt. Shasta, or one week backpacking in the Sierra, thanks to a grant from Youth Outside. Additionally, all new students will go on an overnight trip to Santa Clara University, since college starts in middle school!
