Sunrise Students Continue to Soar on State Assessments

Although the California Department of Education will not officially release statewide assessment results for several more weeks, Sunrise Middle School has completed its own tabulation of student scores—and the preliminary results are our strongest yet.

Preliminary Spring 2026 State Assessment Results

  • Mathematics: 46.6% of students met or exceeded state standards
  • English Language Arts: 41.6%
  • Science: 38.5%

We anticipate only minor adjustments, if any, when the California Department of Education releases the official results later this summer.

How Sunrise Compares

Last year’s statewide proficiency rates were:

SubjectCalifornia AverageLow-Income Latino Students
Mathematics37.3%22.2%
English Language Arts48.8%34.8%
Science32.7%18.5%

While statewide 2026 results have not yet been released, Sunrise’s preliminary scores place us well above last year’s averages for low-income Latino students in all three tested subjects. Our Mathematics and Science scores also exceed last year’s statewide averages for all California students.

These results are especially meaningful because Sunrise serves a student population that is predominantly low-income, with many English Learners. Every year, our students demonstrate that circumstances do not determine potential. When students are surrounded by high expectations, caring adults, dedicated teachers, and supportive families, they can achieve extraordinary things.

Sunrise Middle School continues to be one of the highest-performing middle schools in central San Jose, proving that students from every background can achieve at the highest levels when given the opportunity and support to succeed.

Thank you to our students for their perseverance, to our teachers and staff for their unwavering commitment, and to our families for believing in and supporting your children every step of the way. We couldn’t be more proud.
