Sunrise Middle School Students Shine on State Tests!

Sunrise Middle School has plenty to celebrate! The California Department of Education released statewide test results today, and once again, Sunrise students have demonstrated that they can achieve remarkable things!

Sunrise outperformed statewide averages in mathematics, science, and English Learner proficiency. Our students also scored significantly higher than the statewide averages for low-income Hispanic students in all three academic subjects.

Here’s how Sunrise students performed on last spring’s state tests:

  • Mathematics: 44.34% of Sunrise students met or exceeded state standards, compared to 38.35% statewide and 23.29% among low-income Hispanic students statewide.
  • English Language Arts: 41.29% of Sunrise students met or exceeded state standards, compared to 49.26% statewide and 35.52% among low-income Hispanic students statewide.
  • Science: 37.07% of Sunrise students met or exceeded state standards, compared to 35.99% statewide and 21.49% among low-income Hispanic students statewide.
  • English Language Proficiency: 24.81% of Sunrise English Learners reached the highest proficiency level, compared to just 15.39% statewide.

Just as impressive, Sunrise students substantially outperformed students at many neighboring district and charter middle schools, sometimes achieving proficiency rates two to three times higher!

These results are especially meaningful because Sunrise serves a predominantly low-income student population, including many English Learners. Year after year, our students demonstrate that a child’s circumstances do not determine their potential.

When young people are surrounded by high expectations, caring adults, dedicated teachers, enriching opportunities, and supportive families, they can accomplish extraordinary things.

Sunrise continues to distinguish itself as one of the highest-performing middle schools in central San Jose, showing what is possible when every child is given the opportunity, encouragement, and support to succeed.

Thank you to our students for their hard work and perseverance, to our teachers and staff for their extraordinary dedication, and to our families for believing in their children and supporting them every step of the way.

Together, we’re proving that every child can shine!
