Sunrise Middle School has joined more than 1,000 school districts in suing Meta, Google and TikTok, claiming that social media has contributed to a youth mental health crisis and drained school resources. The districts are seeking funding for counseling and crisis services, as well as court orders to redesign harmful social media features. Aelish Baig, a lead attorney in the lawsuit, said, “Excessive social media use has fueled a youth mental health crisis which essentially forces schools to pivot from education to crisis intervention on a daily basis.” The Sunrise claim was filed September 18 in United States District Court, Northern District of California.
